Externado Social Communication -Journalism Faculty will bring together prominent journalists at the webinar: “Kidnapping: its coverage and impact on journalism”

As part of the commemoration of its 45th anniversary, the Externado Social Communication - Journalism Faculty, in association with the Truth Commission, invites to this free webinar that will bring together journalists Salud Hernández, Azucena Liévano, Darío Fernando Patiño, and Andrés Gil. In a space for dialogue, they will address kidnapping from their personal experience, representative cases from different times, and the media responsibility in its coverage.

Writer and journalist Patricia Lara will act as moderator. She will chat with our guests about their experience as ex-hostages, self-censorship, and information handling in the kidnapping context.

Guest profile:

  • Salud Hernández: Colombian-Spanish journalist, columnist, and writer, currently working with Semana magazine. She was kidnapped for ten days by the ELN in the Catatumbo area and released on May 27, 2016, thanks to the Catholic Church’s efforts and after the activation of a humanitarian corridor.
  • Azucena Liévano: Noticias Caracol journalist. Expert in resilience issues. She was kidnapped at the age of 28 by Pablo Escobar in August 1990, together with a group of journalists from the Criptón Newscast. The communicators were tricked with an alleged interview with ELN leader Manuel ‘el Cura’ Pérez. After three months in captivity, she was released on December 13 of the same year.
  • Andrés Gil Gómez: News correspondent for Noticias RCN and NTN 24 in Spain. On October 5, 2000, he was kidnapped by armed dissident groups on the Medellín-Bogotá highway. His release, a few hours later, was conditional on the delivery or reading of communications addressed to the government and public opinion.
  • Darío Fernando Patiño: Journalist. Coordinator of the Externado de Colombia Social Communication – Journalism Faculty Graduate Program. Former news media director in Colombia and Ecuador. Darío Fernando will offer his view on kidnapping coverage and the media’s responsibility in handling this type of information.

The webinar, on Friday, February 19, 2021, at 4:00 pm, will have participation by communicator and Professor Clara Marcela Mejía, as master of ceremonies.
