PHD in Administration
To develop researchers capable of producing scientific knowledge generating changes in organizations from the perspective of future studies, strategy, leadership, eco-innovation and sustainable development, economics and public politics, all within an multi-contextual and interdisciplinary focus
The doctorate program lasts 4 years during which students complete 70 credits. Forty credit hours are based on research methodology, forming the theoretical basis the themes mentioned above. The remaining 30 credits are in the development of a project and in study abroad.

- You will have a teaching methodology which includes narrow collaboration between the student and professor beginning from the first semester as well as with the research group.

The Academic Committee of the Doctorate Program decides who will be admitted to the program following these criteria:
Academic Requirements
- An undergraduate degree with distinction- the applicant must verify possession of the diploma from a respected university in a program lasting no less than 4 years1.
- The applicant must demonstrate competencies in English at a level that will allow him or her to read and take classes in English. Proof can be a certificate such as: ELTS (6.5 minimum) or TOELF (78 minimum). The certificate must be from the last 3 years.
- It is recommended but not necessary for the applicant to have a postgraduate degree from a respected university in economic or administrative sciences. Postgraduate degrees in other subjects will require justification as to why it is relevant for the applicant to study in this doctorate program. The justification should be at least half a page in length. The grade point average of the postgraduate degree should be equal or higher than 3.8 out of 5.
Work Requirements
- A letter from the applicant’s place of work outlining the company’s understanding of the length of the program, class hours and academic commitments needed to complete the program.
- If the applicant’s place of work will subsidize the program cost, this support should last the length of the program including the completion of the doctoral thesis.
- If the applicant is not linked formally or permanently with an organization, the applicant should include a letter indicating so.
- The applicant should demonstrate experience in teaching, research, or other professional experience for no less than 3 years.
Personal Requirements
The Academic Committee of the Doctorate Program will evaluate the trajectory of applicants following these criteria.
- Aptitude for research: the applicant should have the capacity to suggest a proposition for research for the development of the doctorate program. This proposition should be included with the application in academic essay format explaining the topic choice.
- In-person interview presenting and defending the essay in front of the Academic Committee of the PhD Program.
- Review of the applicant’s resume with special attention to:
- Applicants who have received academic acknowledgements, awards, scholarships, honorary mentions, financial support, etc.
- Those persons who have received support or recognition from the Universidad Externado de Colombia in under- and post-graduate programs, after the completion of the program of high academic levele.
Specific Requirements for Professors
- Verification of teaching experience in respected educational institutions
- Presentation of research career including publication of articles, book chapters, books and other relevant academic work
- Resumes from professors or those linked to academic institutions should be presented in the CvLAC format.
