TITLE
On February 15th, 1886, the Externado de Colombia University was founded in response to the absolutism of the dictatorship of regeneration and the lack of freedom of education and expression in Colombia. Externado means openness and freedom of thought, in opposition to the Internado, a school of medieval origin inclined to catechize, that was not aligned with the free development of personality and ideas.1
The University was founded by a group of illustrious professors of radical liberalism, led by Nicolás Pinzón Warlosten, who established an institution founded on freedom, respect, tolerance, and pluralism, as key tenets to achieve peace and progress within the heterogeneity.2
Away from dogmatism, the actions of the University are guided by freedom of thought and teaching, respect for the diversity of political ideas and religious creeds, a search for equality in social and economic matters, and respect for liberties and fundamental rights. Because of the principles that inspire the University, there is currently a strong commitment to the consolidation of the social rule of law, democracy, good labour practices, construction of an inclusive, egalitarian, and environmentally sustainable society, transparency of action, and communication with the community and wider society. For more than 137 years, the University has trained cosmopolitan, just, free, and outstanding professionals, characterized by their ethical behaviour in public and private activity, and their respect for pluralism and diversity.3
