English and the law from English-speaking jurisdictions are very influential in today’s world. Much of international trade is done in English. Cross-border contracts and negotiations are often drafted and conducted in English. Also, the laws and practices of English-speaking jurisdictions have been influential in other places in areas such as due process, intellectual property, business law, among others.
In this class, students will learn about basic principles, concepts and vocabulary of Legal English and the Common Law legal tradition. Students will get to read legal documents and cases, do research, have group discussions, write and speak in English, do presentations, and acquire valuable skills for their professional life.
