This course offers students the opportunity to take an academic journey across the five continents: America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. Through an analytical and critical exploration of key topics, students will learn about the history, wonders, and mysteries of diverse cultures and civilizations. A variety of resources—including videos, audio materials, articles, and images—will be used to enrich the learning experience.
Students will also play an active role in the process by contributing their own research, perspectives, and experiences. The course aims not only to broaden knowledge of remarkable places from the past and present, but also to strengthen understanding of Colombian culture and its relationship with other cultures around the world.
The course is divided into two terms: the first focuses on America and Europe, with special emphasis on Colombia; the second centers on Australia, Asia, and Africa.
Among the topics included in this course are ancient civilizations around the world, organized by continent.
Students explore major pre-Columbian cultures such as the Maya, Aztec, and Inca, as well as Colombia’s historical and environmental richness, including the Amazon rainforest. In Europe, the course examines the foundations and legacy of Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. In Asia, students analyze the historical development and contemporary relevance of Japan and China, focusing on their sociopolitical systems, traditions, and cultural contributions. The African component centers on Ancient Egypt and its enduring impact, while Australia is studied through its geography, Aboriginal cultures, and current environmental challenges. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on geography, sociopolitical and economic systems, cultural traditions, historical legacies, and global issues such as environmental sustainability, fostering a comparative and critical understanding of civilizations past and present.
