Learn about the Lux Non Occidat Exhibit of the Month
Universidad Externado de Colombia and its Museum and Historical Archive invite everyone to see the piece of the month being exhibited in August: ‘Circular of appointment as Viceroy, Governor, and Captain General of the New Kingdom of Granada. Juan Sámano. 1818’
The circular, with which Juan Sámano sealed his appointment to the roles of Viceroy, Governor, and Captain General of the New Kingdom of Granada, was signed on 9 March 1818 in Santafé, although he had been serving as viceroy since September 1817. This assignment granted him the power over the realistic armies in their final attempts to defeat the independentists, and to maintain the power under the monarchical rule of Fernando VII.
The piece is being displayed in Lux non Occidat: Museum and Historical Archives.
Its key features include the originality of the document, Samano’s signature, and the spelling and drafting mistakes, which probably resulted from the anxieties of the time.
