Educating with quality standards
Professor José Angulo Linero, of the Externado Education Sciences Faculty, revealed indicators determining that Colombia has the most unequal education system in the world.
The expert offered a talk on higher education quality assurance systems, attended by academics and students.
For Angulo, education is capable of contributing to democracy from the social relations between peoples and State; also, it contributes to the macroeconomic factor:
“According to several studies, economic growth in different countries of the world depends on education. The greater the investment in this key factor, the greater the economic progress, says Angulo Linero.
Increased economic investment in education will generate greater growth of professionals, working capability, decrease poverty, and contribute to development.
According to the speaker, education also allows building a society that knows and applies their rights and duties. “A country needs an educated population for everything; for health, economy, politics, confront climate change; education is everything,” stated the Externado Professor.
The above is why the pursuit of quality becomes one of the most important tasks today. It is a reference to something exceptional; we must seek to offer factors that other higher education institutions do not.
Additionally, it is necessary to take into account the money and time factors, and especially, teachers’ excellence. The latter is the one with the most impact on learning. Teacher quality will always be the most important issue for those who certify and for students: “The institution can be far away or not have great infrastructure, but if the teacher is good, it is enough,” added the speaker.
To identify and comply with each of these factors, José Angulo Linero suggests organizing ideas from the planning, and formulation of questions; how is the plan going to be carried out and think all of this with the aim to ensure the quality of higher education.
There are problematics that do not allow progress in the field of education in the country: “Since education does not produce immediate physical pain, we do not pay attention to it,” says Angulo. “The armed conflict, extreme poverty, and lack of opportunities have affected millions of children and adolescents that today have not been able to access quality education.”
“If the country had education as a priority, over the years we would see, in Colombia, concrete results in all fields. However, it must be clear that the only worthwhile education is one of quality, and this is the challenge,” he emphasized.
For the quality of education accreditation process, the country has three institutions, the Consejo Nacional de Acreditación (CNA), the Comisión Nacional Intersectorial de Aseguramiento de la Calidad de la Educación Superior (CONACES), and the Consejo Nacional de Educación Superior (CESU).
The meeting also addressed the characteristics of the Master’s in Education and the Master’s in Evaluation and Quality Assurance in Higher Education Programs offered by the Externado de Colombia Education Sciences Faculty.
